Bearish on ETH — How to Place a Short on Binance?

Sometimes you believe ETH is about to drop in the short term, or you want to hedge your spot holdings through a short. Shorting ETH on Binance futures isn't complicated — just follow the right steps.

If you don't have a Binance account yet, sign up through Binance official site for fee rebates. Android users can download the APK directly.

Step 1: Make Sure Futures Is Activated

Open the Binance App and tap the "Futures" tab at the bottom. If it's your first time, a risk disclosure and activation agreement will appear — read and agree to activate futures trading.

If you've already activated futures, skip this step.

Step 2: Transfer Funds to Your Futures Account

The futures and spot accounts have separate balances, so you need to transfer USDT over first.

Path: Wallet → Transfer → Select "From Spot Wallet to USDT-M Futures" → Enter amount → Confirm.

Transfers are instant and free.

Step 3: Find the ETHUSDT Perpetual Contract

On the futures trading page, type "ETH" in the search bar at the top and select "ETHUSDT Perpetual." This is the most popular ETH futures pair with the best liquidity and lowest slippage.

Step 4: Set Leverage and Margin Mode

Above the order area, you'll see two buttons for leverage and margin mode.

Leverage: Tap to adjust with a slider. If you're new or uncertain about the trade, stick to 3–5x. Higher leverage means your liquidation price is closer to the current price.

Margin mode: Select "Isolated" for safety — if the short fails and gets liquidated, you only lose the margin allocated to this trade, not your other funds.

Step 5: Place the Short Order

Now for the key step. In the order area:

  1. Select order type: Limit or Market
    • Market orders execute immediately at the best available price
    • Limit orders let you specify the price at which you want to open the short
  2. Enter the margin amount (e.g., 100 USDT)
  3. Tap the red "Open Short / Sell" button
  4. Confirm the order details and submit

Once filled, you'll hold an ETH short position. If ETH drops, you start making money; if it rises, you'll see unrealized losses.

Step 6: Set Take-Profit and Stop-Loss

After opening the position, it's strongly recommended to immediately set TP/SL. Find your ETH short in the position list and tap the "TP/SL" button:

  • Take-profit price: Set your target. For example, if ETH is currently at 3,000 USDT and you think 2,800 is a good exit point, set TP at 2,800.
  • Stop-loss price: Set your maximum acceptable loss level. For example, if you don't want to lose more than 30% of your margin, calculate the corresponding stop-loss price based on your leverage.

For shorts, the take-profit price must be below your entry price, and the stop-loss price must be above it — don't mix them up.

Step 7: Close the Position

When you want to end the short trade, close your position manually:

Find your position in the position list, tap "Close," choose Market Close (instant) or Limit Close (specify a price), and confirm. Once closed, the P&L is settled to your futures account.

What to Watch When Shorting

Short losses are theoretically unlimited: Going long, you can at most lose all your margin (price drops to zero). But when shorting, there's no ceiling on how high the price can go. Always set a stop-loss.

Watch the funding rate: When shorting, if the funding rate is negative, you pay longs. If it's positive, longs pay you. Check the funding rate before holding overnight so you know the cost.

Don't short against a strong uptrend: If ETH is in a clear uptrend, shorting carries high risk. Shorting works better when the price appears overextended and shows reversal signals.

That's the complete process for shorting ETH on Binance — practice a few times and it becomes second nature.
